VIETNAM GOFF CLUB
While the numbers and skills of Vietnamese golfers are both modest, insiders are predicting the coming of the age of golf.
PICKING UP THE BLADE
Golfers in Hanoi are all in agreement that the number of players is on the rise. Whether that’s simply because there are actually places to play now, the game is certainly taking off. “Once you play, you get hooked,” pledges Nguyen Ngoc Chu, Director of the T&C Company’s Hanoi Branch, Secretary General of the Thang Long Golf Club. Mr Chu has supported his son Nguyen Thai Duong in his relentless practice of the sport over the past four years. Luckily it’s paid off and Duong is now one of the country’s leading golfers.
Pham Kim Hung from the T&A Vietnam Company is another example of a ‘golf addict’. Mr Hung became a follower of the sport two years ago, and in his reckoning, there are around 4,000 golf players in Vietnam at present. Primarily, it seems, it’s State officials that have begun to make acquaintance with this ‘patrician’ sport.
Of course, more golfers means more courses need be carved out from the hinterlands. While there was only one golf course - built by the Danao Group in Da Lat in 1992 - the country now has nine operating golf courses and another 10 under construction. With more links open, several levels of tournaments have begun to spring up.
“Three years ago around 80% of the people on golf courses were foreigners, but now about half are Vietnamese,” said Henrik J. Andersen, General Director of Carlsberg Vietnam.
“More and more people play golf, which should see green fees come down, opening the sport to more new players. In addition, with many new golf projects under construction, competition should cut costs too,” he said.
HOT PROPERTY
With business operations better ironed out in Vietnam, many new investors are looking to golf as a prudent investment area. With many players pulling into the parking lot, fierce competition is expected on the links. On Tuan Chau Island, in coastal Quang Ninh Province, the Ha Long Bay Group has begun construction of a complex of resorts, restaurants, hotels and an adjacent golf course totalling half a billion US dollars in investment. With this project on the boil, a number of smaller projects are looking to tee off.
The first phase of the 80ha Dam Vac golf and Mau Lam orchard-house complex started in Vinh Phuc Province in early March, with total investment of nearly VND400bil. Two weeks later, the groundbreaking ceremony of a golf course in Hanoi, with investment of $10mil, was held in Minh Tri Commune, Soc Son District. The project was driven by the Japan-Vietnam Golf Development Company, and is scheduled open in early 2006.
In the mean time, a series of golf projects have also started on Phu Quoc Island, southern Kien Giang Province, coastal Hai Phong City, northern Hoa Binh Province and central Quang Nam province. According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Long Son Golf Course in Hoa Binh, invested by a firm from the Republic of Korea, will be one of the leading golf courses in all of Asia.
According to Mac Anh Tuan, Director of the Urban Construction and Development Joint Stock Company, the investor of the Dam Vac Golf Course, investors like to tie golf courses in with resorts or villas. The sale of over 500 villas in the Dam Vac project is a sure sign of success in the project, Mr Tuan said.
However, there may well be risks. According to Mr Tuan, competition is unavoidable but he believes that the number of golfers will rise. In some regional countries, such as Thailand or Malaysia, there are dozens of golf courses dotted around the cities.
Each golf course has its own way of dealing with increasing competition. Jeff Puchalski, manager of the Da Lat Golf Course isn’t shy about his ambition to exploit the advantages of a beautiful golf course located in the most attractive tourism site in the country. Of course, laying the divot of good services helps too. Hosting reputed golf tournaments is also another way to improve its position and attracting more players.
KING''S GOLF RESORT AND COUNTRY CLUB
This is the first golf course ever built in North Vietnam. Located in Ha Tay province, in the shadow of Ba Vi Mountain, 45 km outside of Hanoi, it is an exclusive golf and recreational resort. The property includes approximately 350 hectares of rolling landscape located along the shores of Dong Mo Reservoir, incorporating two 18-hole golf courses consisting of Lake Side and Mountain View, club house and all kind of golf facilities. The two courses have been designed by Robert McFarland around a golf school, the luxury hotel (80 room) and corporate villas. The Resort is also a sports centre, horseback riding, tennis, boating and hiking in nearby Ba Vi National Park and Tan Vien (Gently King) Mountain which overlooks the site and from which King''s Island gets its name. The majestic Ba Vi Mountain range and over 1,100 hectares of water surface ensures that the 350 hectare Kings Island Golf Resort & Country Club is one of the most scenic golf destinations in Southeast Asia. If the lush beauty of the Island, or a beautiful caddie saying "nice putt" doesn''t get you to smile, make a lesson appointment with the resident PGA professional Robert Bricknel, an American with a solid sense of humour: he is very happy to live in very good relationship with Vietnamese but reproaches to Alexander de Rhodes to have written the local language in Roman printing with the French pronunciation !!! The resort is open to non-members on weekdays, except Saturdays and Sundays reserved for members only.
CHI LINH COUNTRY GOLF CLUB
A second golf resort, opens 27 holes near Sao Do Town at 48 kms from Hanoi along the road going to Halong Bay.
The course at Chi Linh was designed and is also being constructed by an Australian company, I.G.C.S. (Independent Golf Course Services). The "exceptional piece" of land of 160 hectares on which the course is being constructed around a natural lake of 40 hectares lies within a beautiful valley. The place has already been chosen in the 15th century by Le Dynasty for the Royal Orchard : it is surrounded by rolling forest hills, and nestles beside the large lake complete with rolling creeks and natural water flowing from the surrounding area. 11 holes over 27 have water risks (6 over water and 5 touching water. The resort is supposed to respect the original landscape and conserve for future generations a piece of nature with exceptional features and history. BO CHANG DONG NAI GOLF RESORT
There is located along National Road 1, at 50/60 minutes ride from downtown Ho Chi Minh City. After crossing a plantation of gum trees, visitors arrive in one of the most dramatic scenery in southern Viet Nam.
Occupying an area of about 300 hectares of magnificent tropical country-side, the Resort provides natural landscape and perfect environment for an ideal round of golf. Embraced by picturesque trees and flowers of a tropical forest, Bo Chang Dong Nai Golf Resort gives a really distinct shape and such a dreamlike feeling in golf rounding. In addition to the picturesque 27-hole (which will become 36 and more), Dong Nai Resort offers many activities for non-golfers as well like horse riding or just relax with a Mai Tai on the veranda of their spacious and fully-equipped villa while the kids frolic in the Children''s Playground. For tournaments which require a more informal atmosphere, the Resort also has an Outdoor Barbecue area, perfect for large gatherings. For players who wish to fully relax after their round of golf, or non-golfers looking to ease the pleasurable aches from their first horseback riding lesson, Dong Nai Resort has a fully equipped massage room and sauna area. If you''re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities,, Dong Nai Resort is the place for you! Come and feel a totally different experience ever. DONG MO KING ISLAND''S GOLF CLUB

DA LAT PALACE GOLF CLUB
The Dalat Palace Golf Club is a golf retreat that soothes the senses, invigorates the body and calms the mind. Visitors to Dalat are reminded of the days when the pursuit of leisure was an art form. Now with the opening of Dalat Palace Golf Club, this same pursuit of leisure has returned to the majestic and temperate highlands of Vietnam. Since the opening of Dalat Palace Golf Club in 1922 (originally a 9-hole course), the city has hosted golfers from around the world, including American champion Billy Casper.
In early 1994, Dalat emerged once again as the ideal golf retreat in Southeast Asia with the revival and expansion of Dalat Palace Golf Club. The 18-hole course is crafted into the area’s gently rolling hills, surrounded by stately pine trees, and seated above majestic Xuan Huong lake, named after an eighteenth century woman poet. The Dalat Palace Golf Club remains linked to its past by the original clubhouse, built in 1956 when the initial 9-hole club was first renovated. The clubhouse has been fully restored and remains in use today with a full pro shop, restaurant, fireplace and outdoor patio areas. The clubhouse restaurant offers both superb Vietnamese and International cuisine. Local and expatriate staff greet members and their guests with warm, friendly smiles and service that has made Dalat a popular retreat for decades. Areas surrounding the clubhouse are landscaped into beautiful gardens, respecting another fine Dalat tradition. Vistas from the clubhouse offer a wonderful canvas of terraced fields & pine trees. At 7,009 yards in length and par 72, Dalat Palace Golf Club is an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all levels. Low handicap players will be tested by a series of lakes, which meander through ten of eighteen holes, as well as strategically placed bunkers, which penalize the miscalculating risk-taker. Novice players will find relief with large accommodating greens normally left open for run-up approach shots, as well as wide, forgiving fairways. Dalat Palace Golf Club features par 3’s ranging in length from 164 to 234 yards and par 5’s up to 556 yards. These varied lengths allow a true examination of one’s golfing skills, and require that players use each club in their bag – the hallmark of a great golf course. Four different tee areas on each hole allow players to determine their own degree of challenge on the course. A full practice area complements the golf course, with an open 290-yard driving range, a putting green, and practice bunkers. The Dalat Palace Golf Club is the only golf course in South East Asia with bent grass tees, fairways and greens – considered to be the ultimate playing surface in golf. The large, undulating bent grass greens are maintained to impeccable standards. They present a friendly challenge unto themselves and once the pace and trueness become familiar, players will agree that they are truly among the finest greens in Asia. Dalat Palace Golf Club is managed by Jeff Puchalski, PGA A-13 and is fully owned and operated by Dalat Resort Incorporation (DRI), a joint venture between Lam Dong Tourist and Danao International Holdings Ltd, a privately-held US-based company. Memberships to Dalat Palace Golf Club are available and begin at US$ 13,800 for individuals and Annual memberships are available at US$ 2,000 a year. Family and Corporate memberships are also available, with all memberships transferable (except annual memberships). Corporate nominees can be re-nominated. All memberships are subject to the approval of Club Management. Getting there - Vietnam Airlines operates daily flights to/from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), a 40 minute flight via the newly built 66 seated, French ATR 72’s. If you prefer to see the countryside, travelling via road from Saigon is a leisurely four hour drive through Vietnam’s scenic rural landscapes, plantations, rivers and mountain passes.
SONG BE GOLF CLUB
This is Vietnam''s first International Standard Championship Golf Course. Song Be Golf Resort is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and stimulating in the country. The 100 hectares of the golf resort was built out of the natural landscape of fruit orchard and coconut palms and was opened for play since 1994. The 18 hole resort style layout features at least 10 lakes with tree-lined fairways. Water comes into play in eight of the 18 holes.
Playing off from the blue tees is a challenge as the total length measures a whopping 6,384 metres. However if you would like to take it a little easy, the white tees would be more forgiving and yet challenging. This is a walking course and all the caddies are female. The course has been officially rated in accordance with the USGA/SGA requirements. How to get there Take the Highway no.13. The golf course is about 22 km or 35 minutes drive from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City and from the Tan Son Nhat airport. Any taxi driver can get you there for about US$12 or ask the hotel concierge. OCEAN DUNES GOLF CLUB
Sculpted out of the coastal dunes along the Eastern Sea, the Ocean Dunes Golf Club is the ideal respite from the demands of daily life. Located only 200 kilometres northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet offers visitors a glimpse of a traditional Vietnamese fishing village. Strolling through the town, visitors will discover a more simple lifestyle, where cyclos and wooden baskets are still a main mode of transportation. Enjoy Phan Thiet’s brilliant sun, windswept dunes and sea breezes as you tee-off at one of the most exciting links style golf courses in the region.
Designed by Nick Faldo, the 6746-yard par 72 course at Ocean Dunes Golf Club winds through seaside dunes, with the coastal breezes shaping its character day-to-day. It is an engaging and playable course for higher handicapped players who will enjoy the openness of the links-course.
The Ocean Dunes Golf Club is an outstanding natural site with sand dunes, sea breezes, beach vegetation, and sea views. "We have let the dunes determine the routing and the look of the golf course.
